BirdNote joins PMFA

Nick Bayard, Executive Director of BirdNote, offered the following about why they decided to participate.

“BirdNote is thrilled to be joining this important community committed to greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in public media. We are an independent nonprofit public media organization focused on telling vivid, sound-rich stories about birds and the challenges they face to inspire listeners to care about the natural world and take steps to protect it.

BirdNote intersects with both the environmental and public media realms, and we recognize that both have historically been championed for, funded by, and focused on white people and privileged groups. We also recognize that given the long and ongoing history of racial oppression in the United States, BirdNote will perpetuate racial inequities unless we intentionally practice antiracism in our organizational processes and media production. Representation matters, and we aim to provide a platform where BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and other communities who have been excluded, are welcome, honored, and centered.

Through our storytelling, BirdNote exists to connect people of all identities and backgrounds to the joy of birds and the comfort and healing that nature can offer. Our work seeks to spark joy and hope in all listeners because when we have something to love about the natural world, we feel moved to protect it. The survival of birds and our shared environment is dependent on the care and support of all humanity. Learn more about our organization-wide commitment to these principles here.

We are grateful to the dedicated founders, organizers, and members of Public Media For All for welcoming us into this collaborative effort. We look forward to working together to learn, grow, and contribute to a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive public media community.”
